Clothes vs Costumes

I can’t believe Halloween is upon us already! But that is the way with time. It just keeps going whether we like it or not.

Mason Cooley Clothes make a statement costumes tell a story quote motivation monday halloween

I found this fun quote and thought it would be perfect for Halloween week! When you get ready in the mornings are you putting on a costume or are you putting on clothes? Do you wish you were dressing differently for a job or purpose that you currently aren’t in?

Sometimes it’s fun to change the hat that you are wearing (or in this context the whole ensemble) and dress up for the job that you want, or just dress up for the fun you want to be having.

Are you dressing up for Halloween? I can’t wait to hear what costumes everyone will be wearing!!

Cashmerette’s Appleton Dress | The Joys of Having a Mom Who Sews |Contest

Many of you know, and some of you don’t, that my mama is a sewing blogger. She has been sewing for my whole life and probably longer, and has been blogging for at least a decade over at GMarieSews.

Cashmerette Appleton Wrap Dress

When I was little, my mom made us clothes until we got to that middle school or high school age where it became so embarassing to not have the same style/type/brand of clothes that everyone else had. So I missed out on hand made goodies for a good stretch of time, but in the last several years, my mom-made wardrobe has been increasing.

When we were back in Seattle visiting over the summer, my mom had me try on a few things she had been working on and I came home with not one, but two(!) Appleton Wrap Dresses! If you are well immersed in the sewing blogging world, then you are likely familiar with Cashmerette and her fabulous and fun blog, that is fun to read even if you don’t sew. She just launched her first pattern, the Appleton Dress, and I am so glad that I got to be one of the first to be wearing it!

Of all of the things I have that are mom-made, I don’t think that I have received more compliments than I have on these dresses. I love how they fit and they are quite flattering where the wrap hits. I don’t know much about sewing and all the things that the sewing blogosphere looks for in a pattern (you can head over to GMarie’s blog for info on the pattern and process), but I can tell you that this pattern is so easy to wear and from what I’ve seen so far from Cashmerette and all the people who’ve sewn it up already, the Appleton wrap looks good in so many different patterns and styles! (Jenny even has a little mood board for inspiration over on her page.) Of my two prints in this dress, I love the versatility. The dress easily goes from brunch on the weekends to work on the weekdays, On Monday I wore the graphic print with a pale pink blazer to a client presentation to look a bit more professional. I can’t say enough good things about wearing this dress.

It’s times like these that I wish the things my mom has made for me were available off the racks so that everyone I knew could go buy the dress! The good news, though, if you or anyone else in your life is a sewer, get excited because I’ve teamed up with GMarie to give away a digital pattern for the Appleton Wrap dress! All you have to do to enter is follow DBK on Bloglovin and leave a comment on this post letting me know if you sew and what types of projects are your favorite to work on? When I do sew, I work on home dec types of things, but i haven’t made a thing requiring sewing in years! I have a few projects on my list though!

What projects inspire you to begin a new craft or hobby? Are you a secret fashionista desperate to start sewing?? Cashmerette and GMarie are two great bloggers to follow if so, and through them you will be linked over to many, I have a few more favorites, but I won’t bore you.

This contest is not sponsored, simply inspired by this sweet dress and made possible by the support of Jenny, who has agreed so generously to donate the digital pattern, and my mama, who whipped up these beauties. Please make sure you do leave a comment below with your contact info so that we can get in touch with the winner. Contest closes Sunday night at 11:59pm Eastern, winner will be announced on Monday morning, so check back to see who wins!

Surefire Signs of Fall [In My Shopping Cart]

Some of the things that signal the change of seasons are that the air crisps up and gets cooler, the leaves have started to change and fall, and there are pumpkins everywhere. Pumpkin-flavored things, pumpkin decor things, actual pumpkins, you name it, add pumpkin to it, and I’m sure it is out there in the world somewhere.

For me though, I’m noticing a shift of what I’m shopping for. Here’s a look at my shopping cart right now:

Shirts, dresses & shirt-dresses that are sure to become wardrobe staples throughout the season and the years:

Light layers, in all the capes, blanket scarves, ponchos and all things army green:

Booties (duh-I love booties):

And of course, some new nail polish colors to keep me feeling warm as the weather cools down:

What’s in your shopping cart right now? Do you find a drastic shift in what you are shopping for as the seasons change and the weather temps begin dropping? More Importantly, which of these shopping cart pieces should I pull the trigger on first?!

This post is not sponsored, just a round-up of fun fall fashion items I wanted to share! I hope you enjoy! Sources for each section clockwise from top left: Shirts (1, 2, 3, 4, 5); Layers (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6); Booties (1, 2, 3, 4, 56); Polishes (1, 2, 3, 4, 5).

Transitioning to Fall

Fall fashion week is all about the spring season, and my mentality right now is all about holding onto summer. But, whether we like it or not, fall is looming so we might as well begin transitioning.

I’ve been adding cardigan layers back in with my bright, flowing, summery skirts and tees, along with breaking out a few pairs of booties. Cardigans and booties are the perfect layers to add to your wardrobe this time of year. Scarves are also a favorite fall layer to add on, but I am so not ready.

For your home, fall inspires light layers of coziness, all things pumpkin and leaves and at least for us, the transition to sleeping with the windows open at night.

Fall for me is always a good time to declutter — make sure our surfaces are clean and that a gust of wind isn’t going to come in and blow over a pile of papers. It’s a good time to make sure things like window treatments are in order (so you can easily open and close them for day and night), pillows are cozy and you can break out your light-weight cozy blanket to toss over the back of the sofa.

So if you are like me and you need a slower transition to fall, here are some ways you can transition a bit more slowly:

  1. Wash your windows to let all of the sunlight in. If we are really trying to have summer forever, sunlight is key!
  2. Work on decluttering your surfaces. There is nothing like a fresh, clean tabletop to make you feel good about life.
  3. Start considering some of the fun accessories like pillows and blankets for the living room. You don’t need to cover everything in leaves and pumpkins to start to feel a little cozier.
  4. Treat yourself to a new candle. The smells of fall might just convince you that it’s okay that fall is in fact just a week away and remind you why fall is your favorite season. (*It’s my favorite season, but I’m feeling very resistant this year!)
  5. Relax and enjoy your bright, clean and cozy living room!

When October rolls around we can start talking about adding in some pumpkins and leaves.

Fashion Week Motivation

New York Fashion Week is in full swing, and if you are anything like me, you are stalking the fashion designers and fashion bloggers on all platforms of social media, filling yourself up to the brim with inspiration.

This quote by Italian designer and one part of the duo, Dolce & Gabbana, is a favorite for inspiration, not just for fashion designers, but for all designers and really any person with dreams in life. Basically if you put your whole heart into something and throw all your passion at it, there is no reason you shouldn’t go far in life.

By the way, the background color of this graphic is Benjamin Moore’s Fashion Pink, I felt it was most appropriate!

I hope that whether you are following along with fashion week or not, this has you feeling inspired to follow your passions and put all your love into what you do.

5 on Friday|Ready for the Weekend!

Some weeks, the weekends are just more exciting than others.

JC Project Eats

1.This weekend, if you are in New Jersey, driving/train-ride distance to Jersey City, you should stop by! Right outside the town hall there will be LOADS of food, drinks and good times, for Project Eats Food Festival.

2. My Seattle Mariners are in town this weekend playing the Yankees, so P & I are headed out to the game on Sunday and will be clad in opposing teams’ gear. I love going to ballgames, it is always such a good time!

Also this weekend is the Nordstrom Anniversary sale. (I must’ve watched their Instagram post about it on repeat for 15 minutes yesterday.) Here are my picks:

3. Fashion Accessories: What woman doesn’t love a good handbag?! I was in a car accident back in early April, and ever since I’ve been looking for a small cross body-bag is stylish but that won’t weigh me down. These three are perfect. (Left to Right: Vince Camuto “Baily” in Roebuck, Kate Spade “Cedar Street-Monday” in Rose Jade, Rebecca Minkoff “Mini 5-Zip” in Latte.)

The second row is filled with over-sized scarves that look so cozy they’re making me itch for autumn. Classy enough to wear to work, cozy enough to nap in and perfect for jet-setting. What’s not to love? (L to R: Halogen Cashmere Travel Wrap, Halogen Brushed Floral Print Wrap, BP Geo Print Poncho.)

4. For the home, I’ve selected linens & entertaining pieces.

If you have been reading DBK for any length of time, you may already know that I am a bit of a linen snob. I love lush and decadent linens. Any of these would be great to update your master bedroom or refresh a guest bedroom. The bedding on the left is a reversible duvet set, solid either navy or grey on one side, patterned on the other, perfect to get you through the whole year! The sheet sets are simple, lux and cozy. The Creamsicle colored throw is the perfect way to add in a pop of color and texture to any bed or seating. Lastly, it’s always nice to have some decorative patterned towels to mix in with the solid ones, this option comes in a variety of colors to fit perfectly with any scheme.

In addition to my love for linens, I love to entertain. Hosting friends for anything from brunch to dinner, drinks to game night should be a treat, and with the right serving pieces, you can make prepping for any gathering less of a chore. I love these mason jar style serving pitchers, and they pair perfectly with monogrammed mason jars (with straws)! It doesn’t get much easier than topping off a pitcher and letting your guests help themselves! Copper Moscow Mule mugs make the perfect vessel for everything from it’s refreshing namesake to a hot buttered rum in the Fall, no bar cart should be without them!

5. When we aren’t busy shopping, eating, or rooting for the away team, I’m going to be perusing through our new travel books, purchased on Prime Day, they should be arriving today, and if there is one thing I love more than cozy linens and a scarf made for jet-setting, it’s layering on that scarf, crawling into that bed with a glass of wine and a travel book, dreaming about destinations afar.

What are your plans this weekend? Will you be shopping or heading out to any fairs or festivals? Or maybe just grabbing a book and heading to the beach? Whatever you are doing, I hope you get your fill and enjoy the weekend!

Basic White Tee

That moment when you wake up late, you have nothing in your closet to wear, you didn’t pick anything out the night before and you are running late just standing there trying to put an outfit together; the basic white tee shirt will always come to your rescue.

Basic White Tee

What is it about this simple shirt that works so well for any day? It is so versatile. You can dress it up or keep it casual depending on what you pair with it. It can go with jeans or a pencil skirt seamlessly. Add a cardigan, a statement necklace and your favorite booties, and voila, outfit perfection.

The same can be said for your basic home furnishings and that is why I love using neutral whites and beiges for the larger pieces in a space. These are the pieces you aren’t going to change all the time. You want them to be flexible enough to go with whatever accent pieces you are going to bring into the room that week/month/season. They should feel effortless, like they just fit the space.

The lines of the piece should represent your style and taste, but using a neutral just makes the piece work overtime for you. This way you can be sure you really get the most life out of your staple furnishings.

We have a light greige sofa, that has lived in two different homes with us now, each with their own style or theme, and it always works for us and for the space. We have a beige-y neutral platform bed and headboard with simple lines that has been in the same two homes as well with a lot of changing bedding, paint colors, and accent pieces and it always works.

If you are looking to splurge on a new piece for your home and you plan to keep it for a long time, try going with a neutral, you might surprise yourself with how much you like it and even more how you like its flexibility.

Finding Inspiration

I wanted to share some of my greatest sources of inspiration. These points of interest are ones I can count on to provide me with new inspiration for everything from the details to the full space.

For me it all starts with nature and fashion.

Montana Mountains Inspo

Nature. Taking a walk, hike or drive is a sure-fire way for me to get back to the root of it. For me, Mother Nature always does it best. There are so many wonderful colors combinations, beautiful natural patterns and great textures in the wilderness that it really is worth getting outside and letting them influence you.

Fashion. I won’t ever claim to be a fashionista, but I do love to follow what is current and in-style in the fashion world. I love the fashion weeks and seeing what the designers have planned for the following season. If you want to talk about colors, patterns and textures, this is a great area to look! Fashion definitely has a direct correlation to interiors.

Where do you go to seek inspiration? I can’t wait to peruse more fashion week photos over the weekend!
