One Room Challenge Fall 2017 | The Kitchen

Lately I’ve been motivated to get back to blogging, but when you’ve been out of the game for a year, it’s not always easy to jump back in.

My last posts were all from the One Room Challenge last Fall, when we were preparing for baby P. Well if you follow me on any social media at all, you know that not only is Eleanor here, but a whole lot has changed!! More to come on all that later, but for now, I liked the symmetry of picking up the blog where we left off with the ORC. This time with the kitchen!

I have waffled so much on doing the ORC this time…and obviously I’m late to the game (it started bright and early Wednesday and Thursday), but we are hitting the ground running. We are hoping for maximum visual impact with minimal changes.

These pictures are of our kitchen as it sits now. I may have done a quick clean up, but no major cleaning or organizing because it helps to show how dysfunctional this room has become for us.

We spend so much time here, especially being that I’m home with E most of the time, we really spend a lot of that time cooking or eating IN the kitchen. So my main objective is to make this space really work for our family right now…but also make it look damn good too, so I’m happy and wanting to spend my time here.

What’s on the list for an upgrade?:

  • Paint the walls (I am so over the hot pink accent stripes!!)
  • Paint the cabinets (I’ve never liked this light wood here.)
  • Paint the molding and details (The molding desperately needs some TLC and although I would love to replace it, it’s not likely with baby P in the picture.)
  • Declutter and organize overall
  • Add a main wall shelf
  • (Finally) build my custom table (that I designed almost 2 years ago…)
  • Add some drawer storage (We don’t have a single drawer in our kitchen. Not one.)
  • Possibly swap out the cabinet hardware
  • Find seating

So there you have it. We’re back in the game! Leave a comment and let me know what you think!! Next week I’ll be sharing my inspiration for the new look of the space and possibly a little progress.

ORC+Guest+Participants+Graphic

Oh and if you’re reading this post like, “ORC, what’s that?!” It’s a HUMONGOUS decor blogger link up party created and hosted by Linda from Calling It Home. Every Wednesday for 6 weeks the featured bloggers share a room they are transforming from start to finish; and every Thursday, the participating guest bloggers around the world follow suit in their own room! So it’s one room, 6 weeks and more than 100 bloggers. It is quite the decor party, and reveal week is filled with insane spaces and reveals that will have you turning all heart-eyed emoji at them. It is seriously an inspiring design challenge and I hope you follow along with me and at least a few of the other bloggers that are out there!

Here’s a look at all of our previous one room challenges (living room and bedroom). This blog link party has really forced us to make this condo really feel like us. Though these spaces continue to evolve as our family grows here, I love how the ORC has forced us to ‘finish’ the rooms and make this home ours!

The Done List

It has been well over a month since I last blogged and I have been missing this outlet as a way to express myself and share the happenings of life and work. I had been seeking inspiration and making a lot of lists until last night. On our way home from our weekend away, P and I were listening to “The Happiness Project” by Gretchen Rubin, and she mentioned getting great blog ideas and wanting to save them away but needing to trust yourself to come up with new great ideas for posts all the time and to use them when you have them.

I don’t recall the exact quote but it was something like creativity grows more creativity, or inspiration in place of the word creativity… something like that. However she put it hit me and I was sitting there thinking, you know what, it’s time to log back on and get back to it. It’s been too long! (Check out her blog and book to get more inspo for your own happiness–I think when we finish the book I might start listening to her podcasts too.)

The other thing that had me feeling so inspired the other day was @EliseJoy‘s #100aysofelisepeptalksmake a DONE list.” I’m a list maker anyway so this one really struck me. It’s easy to think of all of the things you need to do, or that you want to do, or even to beat yourself up for the things that you haven’t done yet. But if you stop for a minute and really think about what you have finished and make that into a list, you will feel so much better. I’m paraphrasing what Elise said in her post here, but it resonated with me, like really really resonated. (Check out her blog for and jump over to her instagram links above for a lot more inspo.)

I spent the time away from the blog doing a lot of things, but one of the things that I think is pretty interesting is that I spent time email and talking to other bloggers (or following and reading other blogs) and telling them that I missed writing and I missed this outlet, yet I still couldn’t find the drive to get back here and get going. Sometimes you need a break, sometimes something that you love so much and that you really want to do, you just have to take some space from before you can really get back into it. I tried to come back a lot sooner with a post in late May after a shorter hiatus post One Room Challenge, but I wasn’t ready yet.

So anyway, I think I’m back… I think I’ve found my voice a little more, and I am feeling inspired. Some of the coming posts will be of the catching up variety but some of them will be all new and progress reports that you’ve not been getting. I hope your still here to read through it all and offer continued support.

My Done List since I’ve been gone:

  • Finished the living room, like it’s really really done.
  • Adjusted to hubby’s new work schedule
  • Committed to a fitness class 2x/week and have actually gone and loved it every week!
  • Finished knitting a baby blanket for my dear friend’s newest little one.
  • Spent some time with said friend and met the new baby.
  • Worked my ass off.
  • Taken on a few new clients and focussed on getting their plans done and materials specified.
  • Taken a dozen naps.
  • Spent some quality time with Brantley.
  • Spent some quality time with Pat.
  • Worked out our new budget.
  • Started a “no spending” challenge at home.
  • Went on our first camping trip in over two years.
  • Enjoyed a relaxing weekend at the shore.
  • Hosted my in-laws for a night.
  • Reorganized the linen closet.
  • Cleaned countless times and remade the mess.
  • Lived.

I could go on, but I think you get the point… making a done list is so rewarding. I feel like this ‘quiet time’ around the blog hasn’t been a huge waste or isn’t time lost. I feel like it has been time well spent on a few other things. Or, well a lot of other things by the looks of the list above.

I would challenge all of you to make a done list. It feels so good, I promise! Need a prompt, What have you done in the last month? Over the holiday weekend? I’m sure you have done a lot more than you are giving yourself credit for.

If you made it all the way through this picture-less post, thank you so much for reading! Feel free to comment below and let me know if you’ve taken a time-out in any areas of your life lately. I hope this post inspires you to get back on the horse!

Instagram Recap | Mar.

March was such a fun month! We kicked it off celebrating our anniversary at the sweetest B+B in Connecticut, celebrated Brantley’s 2nd birthday (crazy dog lady alert), saw Billy Joel in concert and hosted Easter!

With my clients, I worked on a few good projects, many details not pictured and maybe I need to be better at sharing these behind the scenes looks at what I’m working on (let me know if you like that kinda stuff on instagram), continued working away on #dbkproject1893 and had some fun with tile and textile planning.

It’s so fun to see all of these little insta-squares stacked up all together as a way of tracking the previous months events! What did your march in squares look like? Did you do anything fun or work on any exciting projects?? I can’t wait to keep sharing more of our life and projects and especially these monthly recaps!

As we move into April, I hope to be sharing more sunshine-y days and flowers mixed in with some completed projects and things in the works! Happy Spring! Remember to leave me a comment with your insta-name or the name of any accounts you think I should check out!

Weekend Design Love

This week I have spent a fair amount of time catching up on some of my favorite blogs. I love reading along with the blogosphere, but I find it one of the things that is so quickly removed from my list that it doesn’t happen as often as it should… I would love to work on changing that, and I think this week I made a good effort in starting.

Here are some things I’ve seen over the last few days that are worth sharing from the design blogs I follow:

Area Rugs and crafting are two of my favorite things. If they are on your list too, this post, on Apartment 34, is a must read and if you don’t want to read it, the pictures are pretty gorgeous to scroll through too.

Earnest Home Co, Living Room Refresh Plans

I love Erin’s plan to revamp her farmhouse living room over on Earnest Home Co, she shares why she chose to work with a designer friend and gives the low down on all the details they are planning to incorporate. Can’t wait to see the after, hop over to the post to read more!

Bungalow Reclaimed-French-Doors4

The Bungalow, New Old French Doors

First of all, if you don’t follow Justina Blakeney and her blog The Jungalow, what are you waiting for. She is full of awesome projects and so much creativity, I always love seeing what she comes up with. Her hunt for the perfect reclaimed french doors in this post was no different. It’s such a good look at the hunt for reclaiming things and how the process works. The final result is beautiful!

apt therapy outdoor spaces roundup

Apartment Therapy’s Spring Exteriors

The weather has been warming up over here and giving us a real taste of the Spring weather to come, so Apartment Therapy’s roundup of sunny outdoor spaces has me dreaming of sun-soaked weekends. (If only we had outdoor space in our condo…)

What have you seen on the web lately that is worth sharing? I love reading blogs and finding good home and lifestyle blogs. I also read a lot of random other blog genres…so feel free to leave me a link to your favorites (or your own) in the comments and I’ll go check them out!

This weekend, we are busy all day Saturday, capping the night off with dinner with a friend and then Sunday, my goal is to not get in the car. I would be happy just checking off the to-do list, taking a long walk with B and spending some time relaxing on the couch with P. What do your weekend plans look like?

Instagram Recap | Feb.

I love looking back at what I’ve shared on Instagram (@designbykrystle). It is one of my favorite social media outlets and sharing moments and details through it is so much fun! A while back I did a recap of my Instagram posts, and I thought it would be fun to bring it back as a monthly thing… we’ll see how well that works out and if you guys like to see it.

Here’s a look at what I shared in February:

Lots of fun projects have been featured here this past month. Mostly interior design client projects that are in some phase or another, mixed in with a little food, and of course, the month wouldn’t be the same without an appearance from Brantley!

Man, I really love seeing these monthly collections. They make me fall hard for my career. I really am one of the lucky ones to be doing something I feel so passionately about.

Do you guys like seeing all of these pictures from the month pulled together like this? Have you tried taking a monthly look at your own feed to see if you see a common thread? Leave me a comment with your insta names, I love finding new accounts to follow, and if there is someone you really love following along with that you think I would like, leave their name too and I’ll add them too!

Love, Furnishings and Needlepoint, An Update.

Having just made it through this Valentine’s Day Weekend, I thought I would find a love quote to share and this one from Voltaire spoke to me (as it notes furniture and needlepoint especially).

Voltaire, Love, Furniture, Embroidery, Quotes, Motivation Monday, Love Quote, Quote on Love, Love Inspiration
These words are perfect not only for love, but also for design and your space. And for me, having grown up in the Pacific Northwest and loving all things nature, being a knitter and appreciating all variety of needle-craft, and of course, who doesn’t love a good dose of imagination?! These perfect words are on a background of Frosted Rose by Benjamin Moore, which I also thought was so appropriate for the weather we are having and the season of love and roses we are in.

Things have been insanely busy and so good, so here is a brief update:

Last you heard we were working through the Life-changing Magic of Tidying Up, by Marie Kondo. We are still working our way through the last two phases, but it has been a big transformation already. The living room feels amazing, the closets and especially the cabinets under our bathroom and kitchen sinks… I can’t even explain how these changes have made such a huge difference. I will do a full round-up when we finish the project. We were originally aiming for a month (which would be next Tuesday), however with our schedules, I don’t want to add pressure and do it hastily and get it wrong. I want to do it once and be done and I think we will realistically be done by the end of February… we shall see.

I’m working on a handful of truly amazing design projects right now, and I will share more on that (hopefully) Wednesday so you can be on the look out for that breakdown.

For Valentine’s Day Weekend, we went out for a nice dinner on Saturday at Liberty Prime in downtown Jersey City, where P proclaimed that he enjoyed the best steak of his life, and I certainly wouldn’t complain about what I had either… Despite the frigid temps and treturous winds, we made the best of it and had a great night. Sunday we both got some work done, around the house and professionally, and today was back to the norm.

Currently we are watching the Grammy’s, which so far.. pretty great!! I love seeing all of the performances and this year hasn’t disappointed so far… we will see as the night continues, but for now, I think that is all for me.

Have a great night! Hope you have given yourself the time to sit down and appreciate the loved ones in your life and spend some time together making memories this weekend!

5 on Friday | A Week Away

This week I ended up taking a week off from blogging. I had posts scheduled, and I had great content to share, but when my Monday post that I had scheduled didn’t go live, I took it as a sign to focus on other things for the week and give myself a little break.

I did want to check in and let you know about a few great things I’ve read lately, that are definitely worth your time:

Master Bathroom, glass shower, industrial chic, shower door, black and white, clawfoot tub, details, beams

If you are looking for a little home inspiration, the gallery on this HomePolish project is definitely worth clicking through. The bathroom (pictured above) is  stunning. The painted detail in the master bathroom makes such a great graphic focal, and what’s not to love about the dining room? The only thing I don’t LOVE about this home is the graphic wall treatment they show… don’t get me wrong, it looks amazing, but I certainly don’t want to be responsible for dusting that!!

Living Room Inspiration, Decor, Progress, Before and After, Bright, Rolled Arm, Sofa, Table Rug, Blue White gray

I love this bright and cheerful design takeover post on Emily Henderson’s blog where Ginny shares her progress in her living room. Her inspiration is delicious and her sofa options are so helpful to see. I love EH’s blog–always worth the read!

Old Home, Remodel, Renovation, Before, Work in Progress, updating, fixer upper

You know I have a thing for words, and this post from In the Fields is great! Catherine shared so many amazing quotes about houses and homes in the post that I might have to work a few into upcoming rotations of my Monday posts.

Thanksgiving, Christmas, Holiday, holidays, hosting dinner party tablescape table setting gold pinecones pumpkins, turkey, deer,

The thing I love the most about this time of year is that it’s the time when people gather, and it is so fun to be the host! I love this holiday tablescape on the Fashionable Hostess. The post is great, with tips showing you how to easily transition your table from Thanksgiving to Christmas and Amanda has shared some beautiful images and details here, which is typical of her on her site… she has a good blog to read anytime.

blog blogger blogging office home office desk work space, life

I love this post from The Elign Avenue, Monica talks about the jobs she had before becoming a pro blogger and how everything she did before contributed to where she is now. I love this concept and feel it is so true. I often joke that if you could think of some random job that’s out there I’ve done it! Everything gives you knowledge and experience, you just have to make the best of it.  And isn’t her home office so cute?!

What have you been reading lately? I love to take Sundays as a good day to read through anything I may have missed on the blogosphere during the week. It makes me feel so inspired for the week ahead… so, feel free to share the links of what I should be reading this weekend in the comments, I love hearing from you!

October Instagram Recap

I had seen this idea on another blog and thought I would bring it over to DBK since I tend to share a lot on Instagram that doesn’t ever make it to this space and I know a lot of my readers don’t cross over to my social media and vice-versa. So, here’s a look at our October through the eyes of the insta’ account!

I tried not to include too many things that were seen here so that you don’t have as much overlap, but no promises that you’ve not seen any of it before. If you don’t follow DBK on social media and you would like to, there are links at the end of this post.

What did your month look like on Instagram? leave a comment with your username and I will hope over and take a look. I loved putting together this round up, it gives a good look at my day to day life and makes me realize just how much I love not only doing what I do, but also capturing and sharing it! Well, my job, my pup, my hubby, living in Jersey City.. you get the idea from the images! I put a little description on all of the pics to decipher what’s going on so if you care to read through you can click on any of the images to scroll through the gallery with captions.

So, how was your October? I’d say, from the looks of it, mine was pretty great!

Busy Busy Tuesday

Happy Tuesday everyone! I have been to multiple job sites all over the state of New Jersey today, this state feels bigger to me every time I have a new client in a new town! A lot of my projects are in a busy state right now, so I might be MIA for a few days with sporadic posts so that I can attend to everything that needs to be done and make sure all my clients are happy.

I just wanted to pop in to let you know that Laura H won the Appleton Dress!! Hooray for Laura–Laura, I sent you an email, comment below if you didn’t get it!

Hope everyone is well and keeping busy sewing, crafting, or creating in whatever your medium is! I’m off to design the night away! What are you all working on this week??
